Startling Image of Elephants on Fire Wins Award

Sanctuary Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2017 has been awarded to Biplab Hazra, for his shocking image of an elephant and its calf attempting to escape aiming tar balls launched by the local villagers. The awards, this year, saw over 5000 entries from across the continent. The winning image, titled Hell is Here, brought to light the constant suffering of Asian elephants at the hands of local inhabitants in states like Assam, West Bengal, Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Tamil Nadu.

This image was made in the Bankura district of West Bengal, which is home to 800 of the species. It’s important to note that India boasts over 70% of the global population of the Asian elephant, and is considered to be a stronghold for the species. However, human habitats have been encroaching and cutting off critical elephant corridors, which has lead to a dreadful increase in encounters between man and animal.
