Red Bull Illume Image Quest 2016 Winners Announced
The Red Bull Illume Image Quest, in its fourth edition this year, revealed the winners of the international photography contest dedicated to action and adventure sports. More than 34,000 images were submitted by photographers from 120 countries, in 11 categories. Our Chief Editor, K Madhavan Pillai was invited to be a part of the experienced judging panel of over 50 eminent judges from around the world.
Following the announcement, the winning photographers were able to see their images displayed at the opening of the Red Bull Illume Exhibit Tour 2016. The exhibited photos are of the top 55 finalist images, which includes the 11 Category Winners as well as the Overall Winner.
Being declared as the Overall Winner, Lorenz Holder received a 40,000 pound voucher from Yodobashi as, a Sony α7R II and a Sony RX1RM2 camera with a full set of lenses, a GTechnology
G-Drive EV RaW SSD and a Broncolor Siros Kit.
German photographer Lorenz Holder was the evening’s big winner, as he received the Overall Winner award for the second time. He was also declared as the winner of the Masterpiece by Yodobashi and Playground category. He won the award for this photo of BMX cyclist Senad Grosic performing a trick on a bridge in Gablenz, Germany.
Denis Klero from Russia won the Close Up category for his black and white shot of climber Rustam Gelmanov showing his chalk-covered hands in Fontainebleau, France.
Luke Shadbolt of Australia won the Energy category for his black and white image showing the power of nature.
The Enhance category was won by Dean Treml from New Zealand for his image of cliff diver Jonathan Paredes jumping from the 28-meter platform on the roof of the Copenhagen Opera House during the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series, 2013.
The Lifestyle category was won by Jody MacDonald of Canada for her image of her brother Ken MacDonald sitting on top of a train during their adventure through the Sahara Desert.
Ale Di Lullo from Italy won the New Creativity category for his shot of Aaron Chase riding his mountain bike on the windshield of an NYC cab.
Sequence by Sony
The Sequence category was won by from the Czech Republic for his shot of the Flying Bulls aerobatic team in action.
Dean Treml from New Zeland won the Spirit category with this photo of Josh Neilson being supported by fellow paddlers as he waits for a helicopter evacuation after a bad landing.
Micky Wiswedel of South Africa won the Wings category for his shot of climber Jamie Smith mid-fall as he attempts a new route on Table Mountain, Cape Town.
The Mobile category which was a newly added category was won by Vegard Aasen, Norway for his black and white mountaineering image taken in Hakuba, Japan.
